Decorating a Small Home with Style

Decorating a home can be difficult when you are limited on space.  Decorating a small home with your own personal style, may be a real challenge.  With a few decorating tips, you can turn a small home into a stylish home in no time.

With any room, start out by selecting a focal point.  This is the area that you want people to notice as they enter the room.  To create the focal point, select wall décor that is dramatic or eye-catching.  You can add to it by putting a side board or a piece of furniture below it, choosing pieces that are not heavy and open.

If it is in the budget, remove the carpet and add hardwood or tile flooring.  Place rugs in entryways and sitting areas.  Choose rugs that are small and without much detailing.  Rugs with a lot of color and detail can make a room look busy.

Minimize the bulky furniture and only put pieces that are necessary to complete the room. Choose a love seat over a couch or put in two wingback chairs instead. Add tables with glass tops or tables with a dual purpose like the Spiral Wine Table. Consider adding furniture and fabrics with solid colors rather than detailed patterns.

For lighting, avoid table lamps since they take up a lot of room. A decorative chandelier makes a great choice for lighting an entire room. Wall sconces are another great idea and can serve as accent pieces for your walls. Torch lamps are perfect for standing behind furniture and in narrow spaces. They also make the room seem larger by drawing your attention upward.

Always finish the room with accents. Just don’t go crazy with the knick-knacks. A little vase with flowers or a framed portrait of a family member is sufficient for an end table or coffee table. Pillows are also nice on beds and couches, but one or two is plenty.

A small home can feel more spacious and open while reflecting your personal decorating style. Just start off by choosing a focal point and removing carpet. Make sure to minimize bulky furniture and consider adding sconces or torch lamps. To complete the room add a few small accents to give it that personal touch and before you know it you will have a spacious and stylish space.
